Background of the Study
In response to the global trend of language endangerment, government-supported language programs have become instrumental in preserving indigenous languages. In Benue State, where the Tiv language is spoken, several initiatives aim to revitalize and sustain linguistic heritage. These programs include curriculum integration, community language workshops, radio broadcasts, and cultural events that promote the use of Tiv in everyday communication (Agba, 2023). Government support is critical for providing the necessary resources, teacher training, and media exposure required for language maintenance. Such programs are designed to not only preserve the language but also to foster a sense of identity and pride among Tiv speakers. However, the effectiveness of these programs often varies due to challenges in policy implementation, funding constraints, and socio-economic factors. This study appraises the government-supported language programs for Tiv language preservation by examining their design, implementation, and outcomes. It aims to highlight best practices and identify gaps that need to be addressed to ensure the long-term sustainability of the Tiv language (Okorie, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Despite governmental efforts to support Tiv language preservation, many programs face challenges such as inadequate funding, insufficient community engagement, and limited media reach. These issues create a gap between policy intent and actual outcomes, threatening the long-term viability of the Tiv language. The study seeks to investigate how effective these government-supported programs are in fostering Tiv language use, and what improvements are necessary to enhance their impact (Agba, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of government-supported Tiv language programs.

  2. To identify challenges affecting program outcomes.

  3. To recommend strategies for improving language preservation efforts.

Research Questions

  1. What government-supported programs exist for Tiv language preservation?

  2. How effective are these programs in promoting Tiv language usage?

  3. What challenges hinder their success and how can they be overcome?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it critically examines government-supported programs for Tiv language preservation, providing actionable insights for policymakers and cultural organizations. The findings will help enhance the sustainability of the Tiv language by addressing existing challenges and refining program strategies (Agba, 2023; Okorie, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to government-supported language programs for Tiv language preservation in Benue State and does not extend to private or informal initiatives.
